This course consists of 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction and meets the requirements for Joshua’s Law and qualifies for the Teen Driver’s Education insurance discount. (Georgia Code O.C.G.A. 33-9-42) The classroom portion is intended to teach students in small groups with one instructor. The students should have strong attention, behavior, and test taking skills. The fee for the course starts at $385 and covers both the classroom and behind the wheel portions.
In order to maintain the high quality and consistency of instruction, absences are not permitted. If a student misses a class or any portion of a class he/she will be dropped from the class roll at that point and may enroll in a future course as space allows. Please be careful to enroll in a session that you know your teen can complete without absences.
Upon successful completion of classroom and driving portions of the course, the student will receive a full certificate of completion and an Alcohol/Drug Awareness Program Certificate (ADAP).
Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) instruction is one-on-one instruction that occurs on the road in an MCDE DDS-approved vehicle. This instruction is intended for students who have strong attention, intact sensory acuity and some experience driving a vehicle. As safety and competence dictates, BTW instruction includes Range Work, Residential Driving and Expressway Driving. (If student's instructor determines student is lacking proficiency behind-the-wheel, not all components may be covered to ensure safety to student, instructor and other drivers on road ways. Extra driving sessions are available for purchase as needed.) All Driver’s Education cars are equipped with an instructor side brake, extra mirrors and meet the requirements of the GA Department of Driver Services.
BTW instruction consists of three 2-hour sessions that are scheduled at the discretion of the student's assigned instructor based on instructor's and student's availability.
Instruction is offered from four locations:
Upon successful completion of the BTW instruction, student will receive a 6-hour Driver's Ed Certificate of Completion. Certificate will be sent to parent/guardian via email.
Our office must have the student’s permit number and date of issue before the student can be assigned to a driver’s education instructor for their 6 hours of behind the wheel driving. If that information was not completed on the registration form, you will need to send us this info either via email or phone before your student will be assigned to an instructor for the behind-the-wheel portion of instruction.
During times of high enrollment, especially the months of June and July, student assignment to a Behind-the-Wheel instructor for the 6-hours of driving instruction may take as long at 6-8 weeks from the last day of student’s 30-hour classroom instruction. If the permit number was not included during the registration process, this wait time may occur after parent discloses student’s permit number to MCDE main office. (30-hour classroom instructors are not responsible for permit information.)
Cancelled driving appointments result in lost instructional hours and delay the assignment of the remaining students. Driving appointments must be cancelled at least 24 hours in advance to avoid a $40 rescheduling fee.
30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of individual training behind the wheel
