Just for Youth and Teens
Beginning Orchestra Camp
This camp is geared towards students who have never played a string instrument before! This includes the violin, viola, cello or bass. The focus of this course will be on developing a strong foundation for learning to play a string instrument. We will learn how to establish correct posture for holding the instrument and bow, as well as how to play several easy and familiar songs. This class is the perfect introduction to playing a string instrument and will prepare your student for the first year of orchestra or ready them for private instruction. We invite all beginners (Rising 3rd and up) with no experience playing violin, viola, cello or bass to join! Students must have their own instrument in the correct size, set-up and ready to play. We recommend renting or purchasing an instrument from a local music store so assistance can be provided in choosing the correct size and model. You may also contact Ms. Esposito (cesposito@marietta-city.k12.ga.us) for more information about instruments and how to choose the best fit for you! A limited number of school owned instruments are available for use upon request.

Spend an exciting and fun filled week with STEM teachers from Marietta Center for Advanced Academics, a 2013 National Blue Ribbon School and the first STEM Certified School in the state of Georgia. Students will explore science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math through hands-on learning. If your child likes to use his/her imagination, design, create, build and test things, this camp will provide students experiences to get their feet wet in STEM learning. Classes will be offered during the weeks of June 11-15 and June 25-29. All classes will be taught by certified teachers who are leaders in integrating innovative STEM thinking at MCAA. The week will include a morning and afternoon instructional focus that enriches content standards. Campers will attend both the morning and afternoon sessions for the week they are registered. Students will meet at the MCAA science lab (311 Aviation Road) each day of camp from 9:00 am-3:00 pm and will need to bring a lunch and snack. The classes are appropriate for students entering third - fourth grade for the 2017-18 school year at MCAA.

Week 1: Aqua Engineering June 11-15 (SU180652 A)
Students are invited to come and get their feet wet, literally! Students will "splash" into summer as they work to design and engineer the best possible water shoes.
During the week, students will be introduced to the MCAA design process and will apply critical and creative thinking skills throughout the week's activities. Students will conclude the week with a culminating challenge- design effective water shoe to be tested in our student designed water obstacle course. Let's see which shoe design can withstand the splash!

Week 2: Environmental Engineering June 25-29 (SU180652 B)
Last year students worked to design, create, and plant new gardens to improve the MCAA school yard and to prevent future erosion. This year the students will work to make additional improvements to these gardens by replenishing plants and working to bring life back to the gardens. Additionally, students will utilize the engineering design process to create a water sprinkler system, supporting new and existing plant life and healthy growth.
